1. Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene was a woman from whom Jesus cast out seven demons. This event recounts her struggle with evil spirits. 

  • Scripture: Luke 8:1-2 (NIV) – “After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out.”

Mary’s healing shows Jesus’ power to liberate individuals from evil influences.

2. Judas Iscariot

Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, is often associated with betrayal and evil influences. While not directly battling a spirit, his actions were heavily influenced by Satan.

3. Job

Job faced immense suffering and challenges, which many interpret as a battle against evil. His story emphasizes faith in God despite overwhelming trials, including temptations and doubts introduced by Satan.

4. Saul

Saul, the first king of Israel, struggled with a tormenting spirit after disobeying God. His decline is marked by bouts of rage and depression, believed to be influenced by an evil spirit.

Jesus encounters a man possessed by many demons in the region of the Gerasenes. The demons identify themselves as “Legion” because they are many. 

  • Scripture: Mark 5:8 (NIV) – “For Jesus had said to him, ‘Come out of this man, you impure spirit!’”

6. The Blind & Mute Man

This individual was both blind and unable to speak, and Jesus healed him, revealing that his condition was caused by a demon.

  • Scripture: Matthew 12:22 (NIV) – “Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see.”

7. The Slave Girl at Philippi

A slave girl with a spirit of divination followed Paul and Silas, proclaiming that they were servants of the Most High God. Paul eventually became annoyed and commanded the spirit to leave her in the name of Jesus Christ.

  • Scripture Reference: Acts 16:16-18 (NIV) – “Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, ‘These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.’
  • She kept this up for many days. Finally, Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, ‘In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!’ At that moment the spirit left her.”

8. The Daughter of the Syrophoenician Woman

A Syrophoenician woman approached Jesus, pleading for him to cast out a demon from her daughter. Despite initial resistance, her faith led to her daughter’s healing.

  • Scripture: Mark 7:24-30 (NIV) – “Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.
  • ‘First, let the children eat all they want,’ he told her, ‘for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.’ ‘Lord,’ she replied, ‘even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.’ Then he told her, ‘For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.’ She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.”

9. Abimelech

Abimelech killed his 70 brothers to become king, showing his ruthless nature. His reign was marked by evil, and he faced opposition from Gaal and Zebul, leading to his demise.

  • Scripture: Judges 9:1-5 (NIV) – “Abimelek son of Jerub-Baal went to his mother’s brothers in Shechem and said to them and all his mother’s clan, ‘Ask all the citizens of Shechem, “Which is better for you: to have all seventy of Jerub-Baal’s sons rule over you, or just one man?” Remember, I am your flesh and blood.’ When the brothers repeated all this to the citizens of Shechem, they were inclined to follow Abimelek, for they said, ‘He is related to us.’ They gave him 70 shekels of silver and Abimelek used it to hire reckless adventurers who became his followers.
  • He went to his father’s home in Ophrah and killed his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerub-Baal. But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerub-Baal, escaped by hiding.”

10. Pharaoh of Egypt

Pharaoh resisted Moses and God’s commands, leading to the ten plagues of Egypt, which were God’s judgments against Egypt’s gods and Pharaoh’s heart.

  • Scripture: Exodus 10:1-2 (NIV) – “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may perform these signs of mine among them and that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the LORD.’”

Jezebel was the wife of King Ahab and a fierce promoter of the worship of Baal. She opposed the prophet Elijah, leading to the showdown at Mount Carmel.

  • Scripture: 1 Kings 19:1-2 (NIV) – “Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, ‘May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.’”

King Ahab of Israel sought the counsel of prophets before going to battle. However, these prophets were influenced by a lying spirit. This account illustrates the danger of following false guidance.

  • Scripture: 1 Kings 22:22-23 (NIV) – “The Lord said, ‘How?’ ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,’ he said. ‘You will succeed in enticing him,’ said the Lord. ‘Go and do it. So now the Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The Lord has decreed disaster for you.’”

Jesus encountered a boy possessed by an unclean spirit. Jesus commands the spirit to leave the boy, demonstrating Jesus’ power over evil forces.

  • Scripture: Mark 9:25-27 (NIV) – “When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. ‘You deaf and mute spirit,’ he said, ‘I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.’ The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, ‘He’s dead.’ But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.”

Jesus also encountered a man in a synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit. The spirit recognized Jesus and was cast out. 

  • Scripture: Mark 1:23-26 (NIV) – “Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, ‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!’’’’Be quiet!’ said Jesus sternly. ‘Come out of him!’ The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.”

15. The Seven Sons of Sceva

The sons of Sceva tried to invoke the name of Jesus to cast out evil spirits. However, they were overpowered by an evil spirit because they did not have a personal relationship with Jesus. 

  • Scripture: Acts 19:13-16 (NIV) – “Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, ‘In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.’ Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.
  • One day the evil spirit answered them, ‘Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?’ Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.”
