Bummer – We’ve Been Using Morton Salt Containers Wrong

For years, many have been using the iconic Morton salt containers in a particular way, relying on the small metal tab to dispense salt.

However, a recent TikTok video has brought to light a potential “hack” that might change the way we use these containers.

But is this newfound method truly effective, or does it come with its own set of drawbacks?

The Viral Revelation

In a reaction video by a TikToker named Chris introduces viewers to a surprising Morton salt container hack.

Chris expresses his astonishment, stating,

“I was today years when I found out that I’d been pouring salt [wrong] the whole time.”

The video then showcases a person lifting the metal tab of a Morton salt container, revealing a small piece of cardboard underneath. The individual removes the cardboard using a fork and pushes the tab back down.

Chris elaborates,

“You just gotta move that cardboard thing and you never have to open the salt shaker again because it’s designed for you to just pour the salt out like this.”

Once the cardboard is removed, salt can be easily poured out from a tiny hole atop the metal tab, eliminating the need to constantly open the container.

The Benefits

The primary advantage of this method is the convenience it offers. Users no longer have to wrestle with the metal tab, which can sometimes be a painful experience, especially when it digs underneath one’s fingernail.

This revelation left many, including Chris and numerous TikTok viewers, in sheer amazement.

The Drawbacks: Is It Really a Hack?

While the video garnered significant attention and shock, it also sparked a debate regarding the practicality of this “hack.”

Some viewers pointed out potential issues with removing the cardboard piece.

One commenter mentioned,

“wrong! That ‘cardboard thing’ is there to keep the moisture out…js.”

Another simply stated, “one word: bugs.” These comments suggest that the cardboard might be crucial in preserving the salt’s quality by preventing moisture and pests.

Salt, a staple in most kitchens, has been used for centuries as a preservative and seasoning. Its longevity and shelf life have often been topics of discussion.

According to a source from Reader’s Digest[1], the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirms that salt can indeed last indefinitely when stored under the right conditions.

Another source, Morton Salt[2], states that while salt itself doesn’t expire, salt products containing iodine or other seasonings can deteriorate over time. Specifically:

Cool and dry environments are ideal. This prevents the salt from absorbing moisture, which could degrade its quality over time.

If salt is left exposed, it might absorb moisture from the air, potentially compromising its quality.
