Gen Z Workers are Easily Offended, Untrustworthy, Lazy: ‘Stereotype Debunked, It’s the Older Generations’

The workplace is constantly evolving, and with it comes the growing conversation about how generational differences impact our professional lives.

A recent video with 11.8 million views has sparked a stimulating conversation, shedding light on the unique challenges Gen Z employees face while defying prevailing stereotypes.

But first, a little context.

Trouble for Gen Z In the Workplace

The beginning of the TikTok video featured news from nypost.com, which stated that employers have reported that Gen Z, the youngest generation in the workforce, is the most difficult to work with. The article further explained that the newer generation is:

  1. Easily offended
  2. Untrustworthy
  3. Lazy

which Jordan significantly disagrees with; he debunks that by stating:

“It’s not that the new generation is more difficult to work with; it’s that the older generation is more difficult to work for.”

The challenges in the workplace stem more from the behavior and characteristics of the older generation than the younger generation.

For example, the older generation may have certain attitudes, expectations, or working culture, making it harder for others, including the new generation, to collaborate or find satisfaction in their work environment.

Easily Offended

The video creator continues to argue that the older generation is more easily offended than anyone else. He demonstrated by saying,

“If you don’t believe me, go to your boss and ask for a raise and watch how offended everybody gets. Or put in your two-week notice and watch how personal your boss takes that.”

As reported on nypost.com, according to a survey conducted among 1,300 managers, three out of four managers agree that working with Gen Z is more challenging than other generations.

In fact, 65% of employers stated that they have had to terminate Gen Z employees more frequently. These findings resonate with managers from different industries across the United States, who have reported difficulties in dealing with young hires, particularly concerning their use of language.

Untrustworthy

The video also highlights another perception of Gen Z, being labeled as untrustworthy. However, the video creator challenges these notions by providing relatable scenarios.

“During your job interview, when your boss says, ‘we’re like a family,’ and then you have to take a day off because it’s a personal issue, watch them make you feel so guilty for doing so, right?”

Recognizing that personal issues and emergencies are a normal part of life, employees have the right to take time off to address them. However, workplace cultures vary, and while some employers genuinely strive to create a supportive environment, others may need to catch up to their initial promises.

The Lazy Label

Another stereotype that Gen Z faces is the accusation of laziness; however, the content creator offers an alternative perspective.

“It’s not that they’re lazy; they’re not getting paid enough to do more than what they’re already hired to do. That’s not called being lazy. That’s called taking a stance and having standards.”

Considering the significance of fair remuneration and its influence on employees equates to motivation and involvement. As reported by untapped.io, fair compensation fosters employee satisfaction and retention. In addition, salary transparency can alleviate concerns and increase retention rates.

The video sparked an exchange of opinions and personal sentiments, allowing individuals to express themselves.

One person shared their personal experience in the comments, stating, “I’m a millennial, and I took tips from Gen Z, and honestly, I’ve never been happier .”

Another participant added to the discussion, saying, “As a millennial, I’m literally taking notes from Gen Z. I work to have a life, not live to work.

The comments showcase how individuals from the millennial generation have found value in learning from Gen Z.
