‘I bought these from y’all?’: Company Accuses Customers $845 Chanel Earrings of Being Fake, No Refund In Sight

In a world where the allure of luxury is undeniable, the promise of authenticity becomes a brand’s most valuable asset.

Yet, for The RealReal, a leading luxury resale platform, this very promise is under scrutiny.

A recent incident has not only exposed potential cracks in their authentication process but has also ignited a firestorm of public outrage and skepticism.

Amy Tripp claims she bought Chanel earrings from The RealReal for $845 on March 22, 2022.

Later, she decided to consign the earrings using the same platform.

However, when she sent them back for consignment, the company informed her that the earrings were “inauthentic.” Tripp recalls her conversation with the company, stating,

“I called them and said, ‘hey, I bought these from y’all. So, you’re telling me your own stuff is fake?’”

The company’s response was to send the package back to Tripp and have the earrings re-authenticated. However, Tripp alleges that the business later claimed they never received the package.

After numerous calls to resolve the matter, she was informed she would receive a refund within 3 to 5 business days.

As of the last update, Tripp had yet to receive her refund. She expressed her frustration, saying,

“I’ve called The RealReal probably about 20 times, and every time I call, they hang up on me or tell me they’re going to call me back and don’t. I’ve wasted so much of my time calling them, and they still owe me $845.”

The luxury resale platform, The RealReal, has previously been under the spotlight for its product authentication methods.

In 2019, an investor took legal action against the firm, claiming their verification system was subpar. [1]

The grievance highlighted that most items deemed ‘authenticated’ were merely examined by the company’s copywriters, who were often low-paid and needed more expertise in luxury fashion. These allegations raised concerns about the authenticity of products on the platform.

By 2021, the dispute concluded with The RealReal agreeing to a settlement of $11 million.

Chanel, the iconic luxury brand, has recently taken legal action against The RealReal, [2] initiating a lawsuit against the resale company. This move is rooted in allegations that The RealReal has been engaging in misleading business activities.

Specifically, Chanel asserts that The RealReal has been creating an impression among consumers that a formal partnership or affiliation exists between the two entities, which is not the case.

Furthermore, Chanel’s concerns extend to the authenticity of the products sold on The RealReal’s platform.

The luxury brand has identified that The RealReal has sold counterfeit Chanel bags on at least seven occasions, further intensifying the dispute between the two companies.
