New DNA Analysis Cracks Open a 200-Year-Old Royal Mystery

A recent genetic study published in iScience has shed new light on the identity of Kaspar Hauser,¹ a mysterious figure who emerged in Germany in 1828 and became the subject of intense public curiosity and interest.

This new evidence not only debunks one of the most enduring conspiracy theories of all time, but also gives us a better understanding of the past and the mystery of Hauser.

The Mysterious Arrival of Kaspar Hauser

In 1828, a young man named Kaspar Hauser appeared in Nuremberg, Germany, claiming to have spent his entire life in isolation, confined to a dark cell. He could barely speak or write and carried a cryptic letter hinting at his mysterious origins.

Hauser’s story fascinated the public and led to widespread speculation about his true identity.

Royal Conspiracy Theory

One popular theory suggested that Hauser was a descendant of the House of Baden, potentially the son of Grand Duke Carl.

This “Prince theory” alleged that Hauser had been kidnapped and replaced with a dying infant as part of a royal conspiracy to alter the lineage of the House of Baden.

Scientific Attempts to Unravel the Mystery

The advent of DNA fingerprinting technology in the late 20th century^(ref) allowed scientists to join historians in their quest to unravel the mystery of Hauser’s identity. 

Several DNA analyses were conducted on blood and hair samples found on his clothing, but the results were inconclusive due to concerns about the authenticity and potential contamination of the samples.

Mitochondrial DNA Analysis 

A new, independent study was initiated in the 2000s, using advanced sampling techniques and state-of-the-art genetic analysis. This study aimed to overcome the limitations of previous analyses and provide a definitive answer to the long-standing question of Hauser’s identity.

Now, a team of scientists, led by Professor Turi King, employed cutting-edge forensic techniques to analyze ancient DNA fragments from Kaspar Hauser’s hair. These advancements allowed for the individual analysis of each hair strand. The team also compared their findings with previous research that used blood samples from Hauser’s clothing.

By analyzing mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), which is inherited through the maternal line, the scientists conclusively proved that Hauser’s mtDNA type did not match that of members of the House of Baden. This finding unequivocally debunks the “Prince theory” that had fueled speculation about Hauser’s royal lineage for centuries.

Despite the advancements in forensic methods and DNA analysis, the true identity of Kaspar Hauser remains elusive. The analysis revealed that Hauser’s mtDNA type is of Western Eurasian origin, but the specific geographical region remains undetermined.
