Relief from Deportation Begins for Immigrants Under Biden’s New Executive Order, Shielding 500,000 Families

In a historic move, President Joe Biden announced an executive action on June 18, 2024, that will shield approximately 500,000 undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens from deportation. 

This long-awaited relief program, the most significant since the introduction of DACA in 2012, aims to keep families together and provide a pathway to citizenship for those who have been living in the shadows for years.¹

The new “parole in place” program will allow eligible undocumented spouses to apply for lawful permanent residency without having to leave the country, a crucial change that the Biden administration argues will prevent the separation of families. 

To qualify, individuals must have resided in the U.S. for at least 10 years as of June 17, 2024, and be legally married to a U.S. citizen.

“A Whole Bunch of Emotions”: Immigrants React to Biden’s Deportation Relief Program

Cecilia, one of the first immigrants to receive parole in place under the new program, shared her emotional journey with ABC News. After unsuccessfully applying for DACA and facing years of uncertainty, she can finally pursue her dreams of a career in chemistry and raising her child with her supportive husband. 

“I was lost for words…a whole bunch of emotions were going on,” she said upon learning of her approval.^(ref) 

The quick approval of Cecilia’s application has given hope to countless American families who have endured years of fear and frustration. 

Ashley DeAzevedo, president of American Families United, expressed encouragement at the swift action, stating, “Now, she will have the opportunity to contribute even more to her family and this nation that she calls home”.

From Undocumented to Protected: Biden’s Executive Order Shields Immigrant Spouses

The executive action is expected to benefit not only the 500,000 undocumented spouses but also approximately 50,000 noncitizen children under the age of 21 whose parents are married to U.S. citizens. 

This move represents a significant step towards a more welcoming immigration system that treats families with respect and dignity.^(ref) 

However, while the new parole program is an important step in the right direction, it will only benefit 4% of the 12 million immigrants living in the U.S. without any legal path forward. 

Advocates stress that long-term safety and security for all community members is crucial, and they urge the Biden administration and Congress to take more substantive actions towards a fair immigration system.

Election-Year Move?

The timing of this executive action, announced during an election year, is seen as a conciliatory gesture to immigration advocates and progressives who have criticized Biden for his previous restrictive measures. 

The president formally announced the action during a White House event marking the 12th anniversary of DACA, contrasting his approach with the stringent immigration policies of his 2024 rival, former President Donald Trump.^(ref) 

As the nation gears up for the 2024 presidential election, immigration policy is expected to be a significant topic of debate. 

While Biden’s executive order provides relief for a substantial number of undocumented immigrants, the fight for comprehensive immigration reform continues.
