Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, has been revving hearts and turning heads for over a century with its iconic designs and powerful engines.1
From setting speed records and winning races to supplying bikes for the US military during both World Wars, Indian’s rich heritage is interwoven with American history.
But what sets Indian’s apart from others, and how did their engines shape the brand’s identity and leave an indelible mark on motorcycle history?
The Classic Reborn
When Polaris acquired Indian in 2011, they knew they needed an engine to honor its rich heritage while delivering modern performance. Enter the Thunderstroke. Introduced in 2013, this air-cooled V-twin powerplant displaces 1,819cc and churns out a massive 119 ft-lbs of torque.
In 2019, Indian released the Thunderstroke 116, a 1,900cc beast that cranks out a class-leading 126 ft-lbs of torque. This engine powers Indian’s iconic models, including the Chief, Springfield, and Roadmaster.
With its classic look and unrivaled power, the Thunderstroke has become the heart and soul of Indian’s cruiser and bagger lineup.
Redefining V-Twin Performance
Indian shocked the motorcycle world in 2019 with the introduction of the PowerPlus engine. This liquid-cooled, 1,770cc V-twin delivers a staggering 122 horsepower and 128 ft-lbs of torque, setting a new standard for American V-twin performance.
The PowerPlus powers Indian’s top-of-the-line Challenger and Pursuit models, which offer unparalleled performance and luxury.
With its smooth power delivery and head-snapping acceleration, the PowerPlus has redefined what a V-twin engine can do.
Nimble & Powerful
In 2015, Indian introduced the Scout, a midsize cruiser powered by a liquid-cooled, 1,133cc V-twin engine. This compact powerplant delivers an impressive 100 horsepower and 72 ft-lbs of torque, making the Scout one of the most powerful bikes in its class.
The Scout’s engine also comes in a smaller, 983cc version called the Scout Sixty. This entry-level model still packs a punch with 78 horsepower and 65 ft-lbs of torque.
Whether you’re a seasoned rider or just starting, the Scout’s responsive engine and agile handling make it a joy to ride.
Flat Track Inspired
Indian’s FTR models pay homage to the brand’s flat track racing heritage with a high-revving, liquid-cooled 1,203cc V-twin engine. This powerplant delivers 120 horsepower and 87 ft-lbs of torque, making it perfect for carving up twisty roads or tearing up dirt.
The FTR’s engine is designed for performance, with a flat torque curve that delivers instant acceleration in any gear.
Whether you’re a seasoned racer or just looking for an adrenaline rush, the FTR’s engine will keep you returning for more.
Indian Motorcycle’s engine lineup is a testament to the brand’s commitment to performance, innovation, and craftsmanship. From the classic Thunderstroke to the cutting-edge PowerPlus, each engine is designed and built in America with passion and precision.
As Indian continues to expand its global reach, one thing remains constant: the soul-stirring power that comes from the heart of every Indian Motorcycle.
