Friendships formed in childhood often become set in stone. Best friends forever.
But once life starts getting in the way, the building blocks to those friendships may begin to chip away.
For this one Redditor, she expressed hurt when her relationship with her best friend started to change when he got a girlfriend.
The OP (original poster), was looking to know whether she is the a****le in her fight with her best friend.
But They’re “Married”
She mentioned that she and her best friend go way back. They’ve known each other since they were kids, and even had a fake marriage when she was 7 years old and he was 8.
They used to have sleepovers and movie nights in each other’s houses.
Having a solid friendship as they grew older, and in high school, they even recreated their wedding pictures from when they were kids.
She’s Angry She’s No Longer the Priority
When her best friend got a girlfriend, she noticed that he no longer hangs out with her the same as before.
She felt that he had started to keep his distance from her.
But he did not actually throw her away as a friend. They still get a cup of coffee sometimes, but he no longer visits her house and doesn’t invite her over to theirs either.
They used to be inseparable, but now she feels “neglected and hurt.”
The Feeling of Betrayal
She felt betrayed when she saw that he replaced their fake wedding picture in his wallet with a picture of him and his girlfriend. They had coffee together, and when he was about to pay, she saw the picture and confronted him about it.
When he was nonchalant and didn’t see the issue with it, she said:
“Really? Why did you have to take our picture out and replace it with him and [girlfriend]?”
He answers her with the obvious. His girlfriend’s picture was in his wallet because it was his girlfriend.
And asked,
“Why I’m making such a big deal about it.”
The Response
The OP responded with,
“She might be his gf but he can’t just throw me away, I’ve been his best friend since primary school, my pic existed in his wallet first and he throws it away to replace me with someone he knows significantly less?”
So her best friend wouldn’t talk to her unless she stops being an “immature annoying brat.”
Girl Best Friend vs. Girlfriend
Redditors think this is just a classic case of jealousy when the guy best friend gets a girlfriend and spends less time with the girl best friend. “OP sounds like a jealous girlfriend that doesn’t accept that the guy isn’t actually her partner.”
One cleverly says,
“She’s about to get served with some fake divorce papers.”
Commenters agree that she might be overstepping her boundaries.
“It doesn’t matter who knew him first. It’s not a competition. For all you know, she could be his future wife.”
Some pointed out that adult friendships mean seeing less of the people you used to see almost every day.
“Seeing him every couple of days for coffee is way more than adults see their friends unless they live or work with them).”
Others warned her that she’s “in for a surprise when she has to replace this friendship she’s ruining with actual adult friendships.”
