10. 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt

When Ford decided to shoehorn their monstrous 427 cubic inch V8 into the midsize Fairlane body, they created a legend. This purpose-built drag racer was so extreme that Ford felt compelled to attach a disclaimer to the glove box, warning buyers that it was built solely for competition use.

The Thunderbolt’s 427 engine was officially rated at 425 horsepower, but experts believe it produced closer to 600 hp. Only 100 units were produced, making it incredibly rare and valuable today. 

With a quarter-mile time of 11.6 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph, the Thunderbolt dominated the 1964 NHRA season, securing Ford the Manufacturer’s Cup.

11. 1969 Dodge Charger 500
