One significant incident occurred on May 24, 1865, when armed men raided a Union camp near Danburg Crossroads in Georgia, stealing a portion of the Richmond bank gold that was being transported north. Only about $140,000 of this stolen gold was recovered, fueling further legends and treasure hunts in the area.​
