‘What is this?’ McDonald’s Customer Requests Iced Coffee But Receives a Milk-Heavy Surprise

Coffee is a daily ritual for many people, providing much-needed caffeine to kickstart the day.

However, not all coffee is created equal, and a recent incident involving McDonald’s iced coffee has sparked a debate about the dairy-to-coffee ratio in the popular beverage.

The school employee, who remains anonymous, was filmed by her co-worker Jeremiah Kim as she walked into his room holding a large cup of iced coffee from McDonald’s. “McDonald’s has to be stopped.

“I asked for an iced coffee; what is this?” the woman exclaimed, pointing at the light brown beverage in her hand. She had explicitly asked for “a little bit of regular milk” after discovering that the location did not offer non-dairy milk options.

Despite her request, the coffee was visibly filled with a significant amount of milk or cream.

The Public Reaction

The video quickly gained traction, especially among coffee lovers, accumulating more than 4.7 million views and about 1700 comments.

Commenters were split on the issue. Some agreed that the drink contained too much milk or cream, with one person stating,

“Coffee is a much darker brown. What she’s holding is a milk beverage with coffee instead of a coffee with milk.”

Another one added,

“That’s Milk with a little coffee”

Others defended McDonald’s, saying that their iced coffee typically looks that way by default. A McDonald’s worker even said,

“6 creamer 6 flavorful shots it’s how we make it for large.”

McDonald’s Standard Dairy-to-Coffee Ratio

McDonald’s iced coffee is made with coffee brewed from 100 percent Arabica beans and includes cream and sugar syrup. It can also be flavored with French vanilla, sugar-free French vanilla, caramel, or hazelnut.

The key to recreating the McDonald’s iced coffee recipe is to start with an extra-strong brew rather than skimp on the cream. Making your simple syrup is essential for achieving the drink’s consistent sweetness. The syrup is made by simmering 1 cup of water and 1 cup of granulated sugar until the sugar is fully dissolved.

The coffee is brewed using 10-15 tablespoons of coffee grounds and 3 cups of water. Once brewed, the coffee is poured over ice and mixed with 2/3 cup of cream and 1/2 cup of simple syrup. The mixture is then poured into glasses filled with ice and served with a straw.

Tips for Ordering

One commenter suggested a workaround for those who prefer a stronger coffee flavor: “Ask for it black with milk for less.” This tip could help customers achieve their desired coffee-to-milk ratio and avoid any surprises.
